An Unforgettable Week-Long Retreat Workshop in Paradise

Step away from the demands of everyday practice and immerse yourself in a week devoted to learning, connection, and renewal.

At the beautiful Pura Vida Retreat & Spa, you’ll earn 30 hours of continuing education while developing practical Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques® skills you can bring directly into your client sessions.

This retreat offers a rare balance of focused hands-on education and time to restore yourself. Between workshop sessions, connect with therapists from around the world, enjoy the resort’s spa services, explore Costa Rica on a guided excursion, or simply slow down and take in the surroundings.

You’ll return home refreshed, inspired, and equipped with new ways to help your clients move more freely and comfortably.

The Workshop

MAT Sequences: From Techniques to Treatment Strategy (30 CE)

This 30-hour hands-on retreat focuses on one of MAT’s most practical applications: short, well-organized regional sequences that can be integrated into the massage and bodywork you already provide.

Working progressively through key regions from the foot and ankle to the hips, spine, and neck, you’ll learn how individual MAT methods can be combined into purposeful treatment sequences. Rather than memorizing isolated techniques or following rigid routines, you’ll develop a flexible structure that helps you decide what to do, evaluate how the body responds, and adapt your approach as the session progresses.

Through instructor demonstrations and extensive guided partner practice, you’ll explore MAT methods including joint mobilization, active and assisted movement, graded stretching, proprioceptive techniques, neurodynamic work, and novel forms of sensory stimulation.

These sequences provide structure and allow you to work more deliberately while remaining responsive to your client. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have practical regional sequences you can begin using immediately to help free restrictions, reduce strain, soften protective guarding, and improve movement.

Whether you are encountering MAT for the first time or continuing your journey toward Master Myoskeletal Therapist® certification, this retreat will deepen your hands-on skills, clinical reasoning, and understanding of how MAT approaches the body’s interconnected patterns.

Bring your partner

You’ll have plenty of time for relaxation and recreation, so why not bring your partner? Share the experience without leaving anyone behind. Spend some time together and enjoy the resort amenities and exceptional spa treatments. Or participate in group adventure activities organized through the resort like:

COSTA RICA RETREAT TRAVEL DETAILS

“Women’s Health and Wellness Retreat”

December 5-12, 2026

Pura Vida Retreat & Spa

You will need a Current Passport to travel to Costa Rica.

NOTE: Your Passport MUST BE VALID through at least SIX months after your dates of travel.

It is an easy trip …. Just book your flight into San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO Airport Code). You also need to fill out the Pura Vida Shuttle Form. Please put Annette Franks as the group leader.

A Pura Vida Retreat & Spa driver will be waiting for you outside. Claim your bag(s), proceed through customs, and exit the airport terminal to the outside International Arrivals corridor. The shuttle driver will be waiting for you in the roped off line on the left, in front of the Malinche Restaurant (located on the right) holding a sign reading “Pura Vida Retreat & Spa”. Your name or Annette Franks Group will be displayed. Please do not accept help from anyone who is not properly identified as Pura Vida Staff or holding a sign with your name/group’s name on it.

Your Pura Vida SHUTTLE rides have been PREPAID as part of your retreat package and so all you need to do is tip the driver (if you choose) and make sure we have your Arrival Airline, Flight #, Date and Arrival Time at least three weeks ahead by filling out the Pura Vida SHUTTLE FORM.

The Pura Vida drivers track your flight. However, if your airline or flight # changes please contact the Retreat Center directly as soon as possible.

WhatsApp Pura Vida Front Desk: +506 8701 4031
Dialing the Retreat Center from Costa Rica: 2-483-0033
Dialing the Retreat Center from the US or Canada (678) 661-2140
Email: frontdesk@puravidaspacr.com (Note the “cr” at the end of spa)
Pura Vida Retreat & Spa Physical Address:
Calle Puente Negro
800 Mts SW of CENCINAI
Pavas, Carrizal, Alajuela, Alajuela, 20103

They make our transportation easy for us if you fill out the Pura Vida SHUTTLE FORM The Pura Vida shuttle will only pick-up at SJO Airport and only at the pre-arranged times. The Driver takes you directly to Pura Vida Retreat & Spa…a 20-25 Minute trip from the airport.

The Driver will take you and your bags directly to the Pura Vida & Retreat & Spa Check In Center at the Front Desk for your check-in. The Front Desk will ask you for your passport number and credit card information. Your ‘Women’s Health’ Retreat has been pre-paid in full prior to your arrival, however, all your “extras” during your stay will be billed to your room under your individual name.

Almost everything “extra” you choose to do at the Spa (like spa treatments, excursions and drinks at the raw juice and smoothie bar etc) will be added to your room bill and you will settle up at the end of your stay. You rarely need to carry any money around with you at the spa. American Money is accepted almost everywhere in Costa Rica. We recommend bringing extra $5 and $10 and $20 U.S. bills for tipping and for outside purchases. Small bills are easier for merchants.

All the rooms have Safes in them for you to keep your passports and money if you choose.

You don’t need a car…the spa has great excursions you can sign up for and do with Tour Guides directly from the retreat center.

You sign up for the Excursions and Spa Treatments AFTER you arrive at Pura Vida.

The Excursions are fun, easy ways to experience pieces of Costa Rica…. Pura VidaCli does the work and planning…….we enjoy the experiences. All Excursions and Spa Treatments will be billed to your room number, under your individual name.

The front desk at Pura Vida onsite will also help you reserve a car and driver if you want to go touring on your own during your afternoon free times.

Click here for Pura Vida’s FAQ’s.

PERSONAL TRAVEL NEEDS

In December, the temperature in Costa Rica is usually sunny and in the 80’s during the day and in the 60’s at night. It’s sunny, warm weather ideal for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing. We’re atop a mountain so bugs are usually fewer, and humidity is lower.

Here’s a Suggested list of Personal Needs for Costa Rica Retreat Week:

Dress comfortably and casually all week. No special clothes are needed for the Qigong and movement practices with the exception your clothes need to provide you with ease of motion for the movements. You can wear regular casual clothes all week if you choose.

Pura Vida Retreat & Spa has a very affordable laundry service we can use. Just drop your bag of laundry off any morning on your way to breakfast to the front desk and they will deliver it to your room in the afternoon (usually for less than $8 for a bag of clothes). You can pack light if you want.

We highly recommend comfortable walking/hiking shoes and comfortable walking/hiking sandals for the entire week.
Sunglasses ~ Suntan Lotion ~ Sun Block ~ Bug Spray ~ Flashlight
Bring Bathing Attire to Savor the Heated Saltwater Pool and the Outdoor Hot Tub.
Short Sleeve Shirts for the Day…Tees and Tank Tops
Shorts and Capri Pants for the Daytime
Shorts or Jeans or Long Pants for the Nights
A Sweatshirt or Fleece or Light Jacket for the Nights
Warm Pajamas for the Nights atop a Mountain
Yoga/Workout Clothes or just Comfortable Casual Clothes for the Daily Movement Exercises.
Your Special Shampoo and Toiletries if you prefer your own brand.
Pura Vida Retreat & Spa does provide a blower dryer if you ask.
Pura Vida Retreat & Spa does provide Shampoo, Crème Rinse and Soap.
Visit the Accomodations Page to view the Rooms, the Spa Offerings and Excursions.

If you're looking for a great place to have a yoga retreat, this is it. The staff is attentive, and the location in the Costa Rican mountains is wonderful.

Wanderer4Life

Our entire experience was a 10/10. The service was top notch. The yoga classes were amazing. Food was great. Rooms were clean, excursions and guides were perfect and the massage therapists are all excellent. I arrived stressed from life and left relaxed with a completely different mindset. If you’re on the fence about visiting, I am here to tell you to go! You won’t regret it!

G Kao

Easy to get to via Uber, which is easy to book from the airport or nearby town of Alajuela. It's about 20m drive, uphill, from town. Ubers here are quite affordable and abundant. You can also schedule Uber in advance via the app. Excellent wifi reception. I was pleasantly surprised at being able to work in one of multiple delightful locations throughout the grounds. Beautiful, peaceful, green place! The rooms were so-so compared to the photos: the website photographer should win many awards ;-) We stayed in late February and were pleasantly surprised that we didn't encounter a single mosquito the whole week! No roaches or any other unpleasant bugs. If you're sensitive to morning light and noise (loud birds start at around 6am) bring ear plugs (or ask the front desk for some) and eye mask. Bed was comfortable enough, and the pillows are decent. They already have extra blanket in the room. Hair dryer available upon request. Bring a bathing suit for the delightful pool and hot tub! Food was good the whole week. They always had dairy-free and gluten-free options. And can accommodate additional dietary needs if you request in advance. The staff were all very nice and helpful. A peaceful place to spend a few days!

M Humlum

We had an incredible stay at Pura Vida Retreat & Spa. The grounds and gardens are serene, lush, and deeply peaceful, with a beautiful view over the valley. Our nervous systems let out a collective exhale during the week we spent here. The food deserves a special mention - exceptionally tasty, nourishing, and thoughtfully prepared. We were a little worried about maintaining a healthy lifestyle while traveling, but those concerns quickly disappeared. Three times a day, the kitchen team served healthy, fresh, delicate, and wholesome meals. You can request gluten-free and other dietary options. We would happily return for the food alone. We also truly enjoyed yoga with Tamara - she is a sweetheart, with a creative, effective teaching style. I treated myself to massages with both Jenny and Rodrigo, each offering their own unique and wonderful approach. Jenny has a nurturing, deeply healing presence while still being very effective at releasing tension. Rodrigo is a fascia specialist and skillfully unraveled several long-standing imbalances in my body. A big shoutout to José and Martia, who sprinkled daily joy throughout our stay and were incredibly helpful with suggestions and arrangements. While the area around the site is quite secluded, we highly recommend a walk through the coffee plantation across the road. The tours organized through the Pura Vida also offer excellent opportunities to explore Costa Rica’s stunning natural beauty.

A Humlum

We had an absolutely fantastic stay at Pura Vida. We loved every bit of it—from the scenic views over the valley and the beautiful surrounding nature to the delicious, nourishing meals and the extremely helpful, cheerful staff. José’s warm spirit at the reception and Tamara’s creative yoga classes were two of our daily highlights. We very much look forward to returning to Pura Vida soon!

S Simmons

We took a group of 15 for a spiritual retreat and EVERYONE wants us to return next year. The food was amazing, fresh , healthy & plentiful. Resort was SUPER clean and staff was there to meet our every need. Cocao cermeony was amazing! Trip to Paz Waterfall was well organized and our guide Jerkey was incredible.

D Hexiao

One warning for those not used to insects is that if you stay in a tent, be prepared to encounter spiders, grasshoppers, crickets, even cockroaches, and many other insects in the common bathroom at night. You are in a tropical country that’s a biodiversity hotspot after all :) A nice getaway from the city, this resort was quiet (other than the chirping of birds and insects, and the rustling of leaves and lush vegetation), peaceful, and calm. If you stay in a tent, you’ll find yourself falling asleep to the gentle tapping of the rain (if you go during their rainy season) and waking up with the magical sound of birds. The spa treatments were luxurious, at least the one I had that was a whole body exfoliation and polishing + facial that was called “Head to Toe.” The staff were also super friendly and helpful, and being able to speak Spanish, at least a little bit, goes a long way. The front desk staff are fluently in English tho.

D DeGilio

From the moment we stepped foot on the grounds, we knew we'd want to return. The resort is absolutely beautiful, I already miss the energy of that place so much!!!! From the layout, to the different room types, the landscaping, and shared spaces...Pura Vida Retreat and Spa exceeded our expectations. And then there were the staff- everyone from the grounds keepers, cleaning staff, dining staff, spa staff and front desk (shoutout to Katya and Jose) were so incredibly welcoming, kind, and supportive each day. We loved our Latin Dancer Instructor, and of course, working with Nicole and Eduardo to plan our retreat was such a joy. Thank you a million for everything you have all done for/with us- we're already locking in our retreat for 2026 and are all excited to return!!
